This week brings more progress in Twitter’s advertising plan, as ads are about to be injected into the Twitter API. What does that mean to the average user? Well, for one thing, you’ll start seeing sponsored tweets in your third-party apps over the next few months. Twitter has added Promoted Trends and Promoted Tweets to the API, and they’ll be tested in desktop apps before they move on to mobile.
This is kind of a bummer for those of us hoping to dodge ads by avoiding the Twitter website, but it could be a lot worse. Twitter has to make money somehow, and Promoted Tweets and Promoted Trends are fairly unobtrusive ways of doing it. Also, the revenue will be shared with developers, so this will help keep your favorite Twitter clients afloat. It’s opt-in, so not every developer will choose to show ads.
What do you think? Are you ok with ads in third-party Twitter apps?
Android users can look forward to a beta version of Tweetdeck later this week. We don’t have our hands on it yet, but if it’s as good as the iPhone version, it should immediately jump up to the top of the Android Twitter heap. It’s also got some new features that haven’t hit other platforms yet, including what Tweetdeck is calling “true multi-stream,” where friends’ updates are blended based on the type of update, and not what service it comes from. This will hit the iPhone shortly after the Android app comes out. Good idea? Bad idea? Do you think you’ll drop your current Android Twitter app once Tweetdeck becomes available?
If you need a web-based client for managing multiple Twitter accounts, Multwiple might fit the bill. It seems to be a work in progress, and the multi-account feature is really the main thing it has going for it. Tweet3 is a slightly more mature product that also integrates Facebook, so that might be worth a look, too. What’s your favorite multi-account Twitter client on the web?
Twoolr is a slick new advanced Twitter statistics service that’s currently in beta. The initial load time is long, but the stats it reveals are quite interesting. You can see when you post most often, broken down by week, day, and even time. You can see what percentage of your tweets are replies, retweets or Follow Fridays. You can even see a breakdown of which clients you use and which sites you link. Even better, Twoolr gives you stats about your Twitter network, like who you @reply and retweet most often.
If you want to check out Twoolr, we’ll have some tokens to give away on the Download Squad Twitter account soon.
Oh, hey, did you know Twitter is hiring again? That’s what their new Rushmore-inspired recruiting video says, anyway. This hilarious video parodies the part of Wes Anderson’s Rushmore where Max Fischer’s various extracurricular activities are listed, but it lists the things Twitter employees do all day. Almost makes me want to work there myself!
Well, that’s Twitter Tuesday for this week! I’m looking forward to reading your comments, and I’ll see you next Tuesday.
