This week brings more progress in Twitter’s advertising plan, as ads are about to be injected into the Twitter API. What does that mean to the average user? Well, for one thing, you’ll start seeing sponsored tweets in your third-party apps over the next few months. Twitter has added Promoted Trends and Promoted Tweets to the API, and they’ll be tested in desktop apps before they move on to mobile.

This is kind of a bummer for those of us hoping to dodge ads by avoiding the Twitter website, but it could be a lot worse. Twitter has to make money somehow, and Promoted Tweets and Promoted Trends are fairly unobtrusive ways of doing it. Also, the revenue will be shared with developers, so this will help keep your favorite Twitter clients afloat. It’s opt-in, so not every developer will choose to show ads.

What do you think? Are you ok with ads in third-party Twitter apps?

Android users can look forward to a beta version of Tweetdeck later this week. We don’t have our hands on it yet, but if it’s as good as the iPhone version, it should immediately jump up to the top of the Android Twitter heap. It’s also got some new features that haven’t hit other platforms yet, including what Tweetdeck is calling “true multi-stream,” where friends’ updates are blended based on the type of update, and not what service it comes from. This will hit the iPhone shortly after the Android app comes out. Good idea? Bad idea? Do you think you’ll drop your current Android Twitter app once Tweetdeck becomes available?

If you need a web-based client for managing multiple Twitter accounts, Multwiple might fit the bill. It seems to be a work in progress, and the multi-account feature is really the main thing it has going for it. Tweet3 is a slightly more mature product that also integrates Facebook, so that might be worth a look, too. What’s your favorite multi-account Twitter client on the web?

Twoolr is a slick new advanced Twitter statistics service that’s currently in beta. The initial load time is long, but the stats it reveals are quite interesting. You can see when you post most often, broken down by week, day, and even time. You can see what percentage of your tweets are replies, retweets or Follow Fridays. You can even see a breakdown of which clients you use and which sites you link. Even better, Twoolr gives you stats about your Twitter network, like who you @reply and retweet most often.

If you want to check out Twoolr, we’ll have some tokens to give away on the Download Squad Twitter account soon.

Oh, hey, did you know Twitter is hiring again? That’s what their new Rushmore-inspired recruiting video says, anyway. This hilarious video parodies the part of Wes Anderson’s Rushmore where Max Fischer’s various extracurricular activities are listed, but it lists the things Twitter employees do all day. Almost makes me want to work there myself!

Well, that’s Twitter Tuesday for this week! I’m looking forward to reading your comments, and I’ll see you next Tuesday.

We can’t say we’re all that surprised that Best Buy’s planning to start stocking tablets, but we are slightly shocked that its CTO Robert Stephens uploaded some pics of a RocketFish-labeled slate and blasted them out over Twitter earlier today. Beyond the shot above and the one after the break, we don’t know much about the HP Slate-looking tablet — although, Stephens tweeted later that it’s a “form factor proto” with no guts inside. He had also said about a month ago on Twitter that “the tablet has a front facing camera….runs Froyo 2.2.” We’re assuming that he’s talking about the same tablet you’re peering at above, but we never know what those blue shirts are up to. Obviously, we started following Mr. Stephens already and will be keeping a close eye on him and his new, apparently non-functioning gadget. If you just can’t wait to see what double B is working on, we’d probably suggest you do the same.

The image you see above represents an entire year of gaming tweets. It was generated by the Aggregame service, which offers a real-time feed of game-related messages from Twitter, and shows the 150 most used words, collected from more than 28 million individual tweets from July 2009 to July 2010. As you can see, most gamers overwhelmingly tweet and re-tweet about the three major consoles.

As for individual games, Modern Warfare 2 and Halo most frequently appeared among 140 characters or less, though World of Warcraft, Uncharted, The Sims and Mario seem to have enjoyed their share of shoutouts. Check out a high-res version of the chart at Aggregame, or simply click past the break to see the saddest thing ever.

Hey Twitter fans! We’re back with another Twitter Tuesday, collecting interesting Twitter news and apps from the past week into one handy post for your reading enjoyment.

This week, Twitter’s rolling out a new feature that bloggers will be particularly interested in: embedded tweets. Instead of taking a screenshot of a tweet you want to quote, which has been standard practice since the beginning, you can now use a little snippet of HTML to post a tweet on any webpage. Now tweets on other webpages will have a standard look and feel, making them instantly recognizable as quotes from Twitter. Take a look at the way an embedded tweet will look, after the jump.

Of course, this isn’t a real embedded tweet. It’s still just a screenshot from Twitter’s media page. The code should be launching soon, though. What do you think? Are tweets really “the new quotes?” Is this what the future of journalism looks like?
The other big news this week is Twitter’s official Android app. The Twitter team worked with Google to create a slick app with a very Android-y look and feel. It’s got all of the features you’d expect from an official Twitter app, including geotagging, photo sharing and more. Google is going to open source the code, so even more improvements are expected in the future. Honestly, Android Twitter clients have been lagging behind their iPhone counterparts for quite some time, and this new app is a huge step toward evening the playing field.

Unfortunately, it’s only available for Android 2.1 users.

If you don’t like tweeting from some newfangled Twitter app, and you’d rather send and receive Twitter messages via good old-fashioned email, you should check out TweetByMail. It integrates with your existing email service — and works especially well with Gmail — to deliver your tweets and let you send them out as the subject line of an email. Okay, kind of lame, but it does offer a useful keyword tracking feature.

It saddens me to end this week’s post on a low note, but it looks like Twitter has suspended the accounts of a couple of torrent sites. TorrentFreak is reporting that, although Twitter has been using BitTorrent to optimize parts of its back end, it also seems to consider the accounts of torrent sites like YourBittorent and TorrentSurf to be abusing Twitter. I’d love to hear from the big T about whether there were real violations here, or whether (as TorrentFreak seems to think) Twitter is out to get torrent sites.

Well, our time is up for this week. See you back here next Tuesday to let you know about the latest happenings and apps in the Twitterverse. Twitter Tuesday … out!

We’ve seen a few cuckoo clock-inspired projects over the years, but one of the more obvious, a twitter clock, hasn’t been among them — until now, that is. Dubbed the Twitwee Clock, this contraption built by Haroon Baig relies on an Arduino (what else?) and an LCD to display incoming tweets, and an old fashioned mechanical cuckoo to notify you when a new one has arrived. That could obviously get on your nerves pretty quickly if you’re simply watching your main Twitter feed, but the clock can also be setup to follow any twitter stream or search to give the cuckoo a bit of a rest. Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be any plans for building your own, but you can get a glimpse of the clock’s internals at the link below, and check it out in action after the break.

We currently know very little about Level-5’s console-based spinoff of the DS soccer RPG Inazuma Eleven. In fact, here’s what we know about it:

That’s actually pretty much it. We don’t even know which console or consoles it’s being considered for, though the fact that it’s based on a kid-friendly series suggests the Wii. As does the content of a tweet sent by Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino (translated by Andriasang): “Meeting for the console version of Inazuma Eleven. Different from the DS version’s RPG type, this has, maybe, the feeling of sports fighting. Perhaps those who like Smash Bros. will enjoy it.” A sporty riff on Smash Bros. from one of the world’s premiere RPG developers. How fascinating!
