There’s been plenty of big news from the Twitter camp in the past week, so let’s jump right in and start with Twitter’s official announcements, including the new Tweet Button!

The first thing everybody thought when Twitter announced an official sharing button was “Uh, but what about TweetMeme?” The popular tweet sharing site — it’s like a Digg based on retweets! — is just the latest third-party service to get some competition from Twitter itself, but Tweetmeme is a different case than the clients and ad networks which met with a similar fate earlier this year.

See, TweetMeme realized that they likely wouldn’t survive by competing with Twitter’s Tweet Button, so they made a deal to help launch it. The terms of the arrangement are unclear, but the Tweet Button will certainly benefit from TweetMeme’s expertise. Twitter will also get the benefit of TweetMeme’s userbase, because TweetMeme will now be pointing to the Tweet Button.

Check out Twitter’s Tweet Button video, plus more Twitter news, after the jump.

Here’s Twitter’s official video explaining the Tweet Button:

and now, on to the rest of the stories!

The other major feature launch on Twitter this week was the “Followed By” and “You Both Follow” info that now shows up on every Twitter profile page when you’re logged in. Now, when a stranger follows you, you can probably figure out where they came from by looking at who you have in common. Both of these features are more useful than the annoying new recommendations about who to follow, which I would file in the same category as Facebook’s irksome recommendations.

What in blazes is Twifficiency? It’s the newest in a long line of Twitter scores that you can only get by automatically tweeting it to all of your followers. You’ve probably seen it going around today, but is it worth spamming for? Probably not.

It’s just a little project by a 17-year-old Scottish developer who wanted to learn how oAuth works, and initially forgot to include a warning that his app would auto-tweet your score. He’s since apologized, but not before Twifficiency became a big viral hit. Verdict: it’s not a scam, but it also doesn’t tell you anything useful. It would be cooler if there were some transparency about what the score means (if anything.)

If you don’t want to run a desktop Twitter app, but you’d like to tweet from your browser without keeping Twitter.com open in a separate tab, Ostrich might be for you. This gorgeous little Twitter client for Safari (I know, I wish it supported other browsers, too) drops right down onto any Web page and gives you full access to your unread tweets, mentions and more, and also allows you to send tweets and quickly share a link to the page you’re on. Did I mention it looks really nice?

Well, that’s the Twitter scoop for this week. Keep coming back to Download Squad on Tuesdays for my take on what’s new in the Twitterverse. Catch you later!

Promethium Marketing Group’s Twitter-enabled tower defense title, Tweet Defense, will be very on sale tomorrow for just 24 hours. Like, as on sale as anything could possibly be. Both the iPhone version and recently launched iPad version of the game will be downloadable for free from FreeAppaDay.com on Sunday, July 11.

The game usually retails for $2.99 on iPhone and $7.99 on iPad, so we’s suggest taking Promethium up on this temporary offer. Unless, of course, you’re one of those people who thinks that every time you Tweet, part of your soul gets siphoned away. You guys should probably go play something else.

I’ve been pretty hard on Twitter-via-email services like Tweetymail in the past. Why filter a cool new technology through a declining old one? Well, I missed something really obvious, something that I don’t have to think about as a writer: some people aren’t allowed to use twitter at work. Just about everyone is allowed to use email, though!

That’s why TweetyMail is actually cool. it’s a way to sneak in a little stealth Twitter action when you’re supposed to be filling out your TPS reports. Of course, you could also use it as your main Twitter application — it’s even mobile-phone optimized — but I’m not sure why you would. Other than sending and receiving tweets via email, Tweetymail’s features include auto-shortening URLs and photo sharing. Worth a look, if you’re into that whole “email” thing.

Stock Tweet AppStock traders are among the many groups of people who have taken up Twitter as a way to discuss their interests. They’ve even developed their own shorthand; a stock symbol is typically prefaced with a dollar sign, such as $MSFT, and tweets that discuss stocks often end with two dollar signs.

Stock Tweet App has taken these conventions and used them to build a custom interface for viewing Twitter with a scrolling live stream of all stock-related tweets. Alternatively, you can use the Custom Stock List option to type in the symbol for a few stocks you’re interested in tracking, and only tweets concerning those stocks will be shown.

We’ve previously covered StockTwits in this space, and while they cover the same ground functionally, the styles of the two sites are very different. Of the two, I prefer Stock Tweet App, but there’s a sneak peek of a new beta version of StockTwits available which is worth checking out.

Apple doesn’t have a huge social media presence. There’s an iTunes Facebook page and what can arguably be called a MobileMe blog, but that’s about it. However, they do monitor the likes of Twitter, like any self-respecting company would, and a recent tweet reportedly ticked off Steve Jobs but good.

While publicizing the iPad, Steve met with a number of tech writers in New York including Wall Street Journal editor Alan Murray, who sent the following Tweet:

“This tweet sent from an iPad. Does it look cool?”

According to Vallyewag, the tweet infuriated Steve Jobs and was soon deleted. When Valleywag followed up with Alan to ask about the incident, he replied by simply saying that he can’t discuss it.

Apple is notorious for great design, extreme secrecy and what many have called paranoia. Teams working on unreleased products are kept under a “cone of silence,” and Steve has reportedly gone off on high-profile members of the press who had written disagreeable reviews of Apple products. This seems like another example.

Lest you think Steve is just a big meanie, he gets it as much as he dishes it out. In rather not-safe-for-work terms, Steve shared with the panel of journalists the flavor of some of the angry emails he’s received from disgruntled fans after product announcements. We’ll let you read that on your own.

In a flurry of interesting (if you’re into social networking) statistics, pie charts and graphs, RJMetrics has just published its latest Twitter data and user analysis. If social media or Twitter isn’t your thing, here are the vital statistics: by the end of 2009, Twitter had 75 million user accounts — of those, only 17% actually sent a tweet.

The delicious stats go on! About 80% of Twitter users have tweeted less than ten times in total. 40% of all 75 million accounts have never tweeted. 25% have zero followers. Also, while the service is still growing (6.2 million new accounts in December), it seems its growth has peaked and is now beginning to fall: July saw 7.8 million new accounts. The growth graph still looks very impressive — it’s just a matter of the inherent quality of those new users.

The report ends on a good note (for Twitter users at least): it doesn’t look like its loyal users are even thinking about jumping ship. Basically, despite the 83% of users not tweeting on a monthly basis, the remaining 17% make up them in a big way — they’re highly-loyal to their followers and actually become more active over time.

Apple might think it’s going to change the world tomorrow with some sort of crazy tablet, but we’re here to tell you that the world has already changed. American humans will soon be able to buy a product called “Puppy Tweets,” a product actually designed, tested, and released by the Mattel corporation. First, you need a dog with a Twitter account. (Who doesn’t have one of those?) Then, you need to use $30 of your actual money to buy Puppy Tweets, a plastic sound-and-motion sensor that clips onto your dog’s collar and sends out several pre-written tweets that have extreme amounts of dignity, like “YAHOOOOOOO! Somedays you just gotta get your bark on.” Then you have to weep gently for the future of our society.

Puppy Tweets lets your puppy… tweet originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Jan 2010 23:03:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
