Listen, we’re sure whatever custom superhero you’re planning on creating within DC Universe Online is going be a precious and unique snowflake — but you know who else is great? Batman and all his friends. You can check out their exploits, both heroic and villainous, in the gallery below.

If you didn’t get in on the first wave of closed beta invites for THQ and Relic’s Company of Heroes Online, you’re guaranteed to get your chance in the coming days. A new trailer for the online strategy title sent to us by THQ included the announcement that the game’s open beta testing will kick off some time this week. An exact time and date for the relaunch wasn’t announced, but an update on the title’s official site promises more details are coming soon.

In the mean time, check out the new trailer after the jump, and think about which of the three Doctrines your strategy will be built around. Wait, you’re adopting a policy of pacifism? Yeah, that’s going to work out really well for you, we think.

Nominations have been announced for the Game Developers Choice Online Awards (to be announced at the upcoming GDC Online conference in Austin), and iPhone developer Ngmoco has secured a few spots in among the rest of the big PC game developers. We Rule picked up nominations for Best Online Game Design, Best Online Audio, and Best New Online Game, and Godfinger was recognized in the Best Online Visual Arts category. iPhone developers Booyah and Digital Chocolate also got nominated, but both of those companies were chosen for their Facebook titles, not their iPhone creations.

So congrats to Ngmoco — the company has certainly made a splash on the App Store with its freemium model, but these nominations show that former EA exec Neil Young’s company is competing on quality with much larger PC titles like League of Legends, Aion and Dungeon Fighter Online. The awards will be given out at GDC Online, taking place October 5-8 in Austin, Texas.

The very first line of the forum post on xda-developers says it best — proceed at your own risk — but if you’ve been kept up at night waiting for root to be gained on Verizon’s recently-released Droid 2, it looks like your day has come. The process involves tethering up to your PC and transferring a couple binaries, but seems straightforward enough and should open the door to surcharge-free tethering and other apps that require root access. We’ve no doubt Motorola will be looking to patch this up with the next OTA push, of course, so update carefully from here on out.

[Thanks, Jonathan]

We specifically told you guys not to tell your friends at Sony about a certain “feature” of EA Sports whereby the player is charged $10 to unlock online content and multiplayer functionality. And what do we have here? It looks like someone spilled the beans, because GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House has been giving the matter some serious thought. “On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee,” he said, “we’re broadly supportive… and we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content.” Of course, this runs counter the free and democratic nature of PlayStation Network, but you know how strategies can change once someone gets dollar signs in their eyes.

The nominees for the first-ever Game Developers Choice Online Awards, which will be presented during the similarly named GDC Online on October 5 – 8, were announced earlier today. The list of candidates reads like a who’s who of heavy hitters in the online gaming space, such as World of Warcraft (nominated for the Best Ongoing Live Game award), Star Trek Online (nominated for Best Online Visual) and League of Legends (nominated for … like, everything.)

Winners will be announced and accolades will be distributed at the conference on the evening of October 7. To see who’s in the running for what, check out the full list of nominees posted after the jump.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, SCE Europe boss Andrew House has suggested that the company is taking a serious look at implementing something similar to EA’s Online Pass — which requires those who buy its titles used to pay $10 to play them online — with its first-party games. “On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that,” House said. “And we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content.”

House admitted that such a system could be perceived as contradictory to Sony’s long-running pitch of PlayStation Network’s free online play model. “In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that’s something that we have to talk about a lot more,” he said. “We struggle with [that] a little bit because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today — a 70 percent connection rate across consoles — on the fact that we’ve removed that major initial barrier to entry.”

Still, Sony has already dabbled with charging to enable online play for used (or, in the following instance, likely pirated) PSP titles like SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3. In this case, the game included an online activation code which, if already used or otherwise non-existent, could be replaced for a $20 fee.

EA Sports has added a new feature to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of FIFA 11 called “Be a Goalkeeper.” Guess what it’s about! No, it’s not about learning how to cultivate a hive, that’s “Goal: a Beekeeper.” This is about controlling the goalie in soccer games. Be a Goalkeeper allows you to control the goalie using three levels of AI assistance (ranging from “none” to “some,” basically).

Now that players can take control of that position, the possibility of full, 11 vs. 11 online play is opened up, a functionality that EA touts in the stylish trailer after the break.

Do not adjust your monitor — it’s meant to look cartoony!

Age of Empires Online, the long-awaited update to one of the most famous RTS franchises, is coming, along with a truly massive deviation from its usual format. Yes, it’s still an RTS; yes, there are still buildings and military and a campaign — but that’s where the similarities end!.

Age of Empires Online is actually closer to FarmVille than an Age of Empires title. Your city is saved online, accessible from anywhere (the game will be digitally distributed, so you can log in from anywhere). You will carry out quests, which will take the form of single- and multi-player cooperative missions. Of course there’s in-game chat too, so you can talk to your friends while you play. Basically, it’s a social MMO, but with ‘real’ RTS gameplay tacked on. Watch the video on its website to see some actual gameplay.

I’m not quite sure what to make of it all. The FAQ has tantalizing yet thoroughly useless hints at what to expect. There’s no sign of what it will cost, but I presume it will be free, if it wants to compete with FarmVille. That opens another kettle of fish: as a full RTS, it must be cost inga lot more than other Flash-based MMOs to develop… how will they monetize it?

Age of Empires Online is slated for release sometime in 2011. You can try your chances, like me, and sign up for the Closed Beta, though! (The beta sign-up survey asks if you’ve played FarmVille and Mafia Wars, incidentally…)

Oh, and apparently this is a Windows PC exclusive — I had so hoped for a mobile title to challenge Civilization for Facebook

Age of Empires Online — the next iteration of the famous franchise is kinda, um, FarmVille… originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 13:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
