Step aside, Will Wright — there’s a new Hollywood It-Girl on the video game industry conference keynote scene. Yes, it seems event planners across the globe are trying to get Deus Ex and, more recently, Epic Mickey creator Warren Spector to come deliver their expo’s keynote speech. The ghostly developer is already slated to speak at PAX Prime next month — but according to a last-minute press release, Spector will also deliver one of the GDC Europe keynotes, titled “What Videogames Can Learn from Other Media … What We Can’t … And What We Shouldn’t,” as the three-day event kicks off August 16.
The subject of the newly announced speech sounds intriguing, but of course, in an industry as fast-paced and cruel as the video game biz, we doubt Spector’s going to stay on top of the keynote game for too much longer. We’re betting he’s got two more speeches in him before things go sour, and the industry turns its collective attention to a fresh face — a Bleszinski or a Levine, for example.

The official Twitter account for the Penny Arcade Expo has announced that this year’s PAX Prime keynote speaker will be none other than Warren Spector, creator of the classic Deus Ex and Thief games, and current driving force behind the upcoming Disney Epic Mickey. Spector’s no stranger to the keynoting game, having spoken at GDC and other conferences before. We got to talk to him back at E3 this year, and he’s right in the thick of Epic Mickey, thinking about accessible gameplay and how to build very famous and licensed characters into his game in a fun way.
Spector will also be at Comic-Con later this week, speaking at a panel with writer Peter David about bringing Mickey and his less famous friends to life in the video game medium. PAX Prime is going down the first week of September up in Seattle, WA, and tickets are still (barely) available.

After spending your hard-earned money on new iPads, iPhones, and other great hardware from Apple, wouldn’t it be nice to get something of value for free? That’s the concept behind Jumsoft’s Goodies, which include art and templates for a number of Mac applications.
The Lithuania-based developer has recently expanded the Goodies bundle with five Web site designs for Karelia Software’s Sandvox application, a set of 500 photos and images to use in Keynote presentations, and nine templates for Numbers.
The Sandvox templates each include ten different page types, everything from a simple rich text page to a detailed site map. Numbers users get nine templates ranging from a dinner planner to a media advertising analyzer, while fans of Keynote will be pleased with 500 textured background photos and still-life images. Those photos and images are also useful in Pages, PowerPoint, or any other situation where professional illustrations are required.
You can download the new Goodies and check out the older ones here. Free stuff is always appreciated — what are your favorite places to get legal free software, templates, and images? Let us know in the comments.

Apple has posted the stream of yesterday’s WWDC keynote by Steve Jobs. During the keynote, Jobs unveiled iPhone 4 along with many new features of iOS 4, including the FaceTime video conferencing feature. Jobs also announced the iMovie app for iPhone and iBooks with PDF support.
When Jobs was showing off the iPhone 4’s new Retina display, there were some technical issues due to the number of people in the hall using mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. It was a slightly embarrassing — and awkward — moment for Jobs, but as you can see from the keynote stream, no editing of said moment was done, and you can replay the awkwardness in all its glory.
As of the time of this writing, the keynote is not yet available in the Apple Keynotes Podcast series on iTunes, but it should be added shortly.

Pulse News Reader — a news aggregating app for the iPad — got itself the ultimate stamp of approval yesterday by being featured in Steve Jobs’ keynote speech. A few hours later, however, Apple had removed the application from its App Store, following a complaint by the New York Times that it was infringing on its rights. Although Pulse collates publicly available RSS feeds, the fact it costs $4 a pop is being interpreted as a “commercial use” of those feeds, and therefore a violation of the New York Times and Boston Globe’s Terms of Use. Its makers have said they’ll be getting in touch with Apple and stripping out the offending content, but it’s certainly a head scratcher of a decision by the news company. We wonder if this signals the start of a crusade against all paid RSS readers or if Pulse has something peculiarly intolerable about it. Visit the source link to read the complaint in full.

While the iPad version of Keynote represents a slight twist on Apple’s flagship presentation app and serves as a gateway into multitouch computing on a large display, it has a few shortcomings when compared to its Mac OS X counterpart. As a result, those who start their Keynote workflow on Mac OS X may be surprised when some of their transitions, builds and fonts don’t show up the same way on the iPad.
No need to work in Keynote blind, however, for TUAW is here. Here are some tips that’ll provide you a framework on preparing a Keynote presentation on Mac OS X with iPad compatibility in mind.
