Do you feel the inexplicable compulsion to map the contours of your grotesque visage on a professional level? MakerBot Industries has come up with a clever device that should let you do so using a gaming peripheral you might already own: The PlayStation Eye.

The MakerScanner (which isn’t available for purchase yet, though interested parties can put their names on a mailing list) is designed to let users create a full 3D geometric scan of an object using the PS Eye and a laser line pointer. This results in a data map that can be used to create 3D models or, with the right — presumably expensive — equipment, a physical statuette. We think it would be worth the investment to fill our apartment with busts of ourselves. “Oh, this one,” we’d tell our visitors, “this one’s us in repose.”

Sony has just informed Euroland that its Qriocity on-demand ecosystem will be showing up in the continent’s wealthier regions this fall. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK will get a chance to savor the Video On Demand option, which will form the vanguard of a wideranging content streaming service, available on Sony networked devices — yes, that includes the do-it-all PlayStation 3. The heavyweight movie studios behind the venture include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount and, of course, Sony’s moviemaking arm. But you already knew that, given that the whole enchilada’s been available to American gringos since April. All Qriocity participants will get to use a new Music Unlimited service, which is launching by the end of the year with as yet undetermined pricing. Plans are also afoot to offer Qriocity on third party devices, but until then you’ll wanna make sure to have one of them newfangled web-connected Bravia TVs or any of the litany of Blu-ray players and home theater setups Sony is busy promoting right this minute.

Index Holdings, the parent company of 3D Dot Game Heroes publisher and Shin Megami Tensei developer Atlus, has announced its intent to completely absorb Atlus to better manage the company’s resources. The dissolution is expected to take place on October 1, provided Atlus, Index Holdings and subsidiary company Index agree to the terms of the merger during board meetings being held today.

It’s unclear how this deal could affect future releases from the prolific RPG developer and publisher. According to Game Watch, a representative from Index Holdings explained that upcoming titles would still be released under the Atlus brand. We’ve contacted Atlus for further clarification.

Sega wants you to believe these three guys are tough. That’s sort of a requirement for accepting them as protagonists of a new Yakuza TV series, based on the PSP’s Black Panther: New Yakuza Chapter and bearing the same title. Japan’s TBS and MBS stations will begin showing the live action adaptation, featuring an original story, every Tuesday night starting October 5. Later, the episodes will be available for rental on Japan’s PlayStation Store.

In addition to the TV series, a Yakuza manga will be released, also starring the PSP game’s protagonist, Tatsuya Ukyo. It’ll be serialized in Weekly Young magazine. That’s … a lot of Yakuza. And that’s not even taking the other upcoming Yakuza game into consideration.

Shank dual machetes

Recently released kill-em-up Shank has split critics – 1UP says it’s the “freshest, most unequivocally rewarding beat-em-up game to come along in almost a decade” while Gamespot claims “style can’t quite overcome the lack of substance in this fun though shallow brawler” – but surprisingly it’s also caused a fissure in the console world. So while the PS3 version continues along, with no problems in sight, the Xbox 360 release suffers two issues on certain systems.

First, users who played the Xbox Live trial and then – eager to continue their kill-a-thon – purchased the title to start earning some of those sweet Achievements … well, we’ve got bad news. Klei’s Jamie Chang writes on the game’s site that “if you unlock the Trial on the 360, there’s a chance that the first two achievements are not unlocked.” The good news: the team at Klei has “already got a fix for this” so you’ll get your ‘cheevos just as soon as that’s rolled out.

The other, and less significant, issue: chugging cinematics. Cheng notes that “older Xbox 360’s have slower disc access rates, so the opening cinematic chugs, and loading between levels takes longer.” This never came up in testing and doesn’t actually affect the gameplay in any way, but that’s got to be doubly annoying. Slow load times off a hard drive?

The good news is, we’re hearing about this is on Klei’s site very soon after complaints started appearing on message boards, and Cheng and Co have already pledged to address the issues. And, as a sort of strange, machete-themed penance, they’re offering the above image in wallpaper format. We imagine it’s metaphorical: Shank is Cheng, and each machete is for one of the aforementioned bugs … or it’s just a picture of Shank. You could interpret it either way, really.

After a few fits and false starts, the image above shows the iControlPad in what’s purported to be its final production form, according to inventor Craig Rothwell’s Twitter account. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, and sales are supposed to start sometime in September, but Rothwell says the unit above is the first off the line, and there will be a production run of just 3000 to start. The unit has two sidebar pieces that wrap around the iPhone or iPod touch, and in addition to the extra control buttons on the bottom, the ‘pad also has a battery that “doubles the iPhone battery life for gaming.” There are shoulder buttons on the back as well.

Rothwell says he doesn’t ever expect to get Apple’s support on the project, but by just switching out the two side pieces, the pad could be adapted for any number of phones, so if the concept takes off, you can probably expect to see an Android version as well. We’ll keep an eye out for pricing and other information. It’s been a long (long) time coming, but for iPhone gamers who could use a few more buttons in their games, looks like the wait might almost be over.

I still haven’t seen an actual iPad arcade cabinet for sale (all the ones we’ve seen so far have been made by hobbyists for themselves), but here’s a pretty cool case/accessory for your iPhone or iPod touch. Pinball Magic is a little device that you can slide your handheld into, and with the help of a free app, you can play a full pinball game live on a little miniature table. There’s a real ball plunger, flipper buttons, a full LED backlit display, and even a Tilt detector, so you can hit all the usual lights and gadgets (albeit in an extremely small form factor) without throwing quarters in at the local arcade. Assuming they still have those local arcades — I haven’t seen one around in a while now.

Unlike the cardboard iPad arcade units, this one’s on sale and ready to go — you can pick it up from Best Buy for US $39.99. Sure, that’s a little steep (especially since it only works with the one app), but it’s a small price to pay to take yourself back to those heady days of reaching for high scores while pushing a little silver ball up and down ramps. If you happen to pick one up and try it out, let us know how it works for you.

If you’re looking for new music, Shuffler.fm is a good place to start. It taps music blogs to create a radio station of the newest songs that are getting online buzz, meaning you always have something fresh to listen to. Start by clicking a genre, and you’ll be sent to a blog where music will immediately start … when you hit skip, or the song’s done, you’re off to the next blog and the next song.

I like that Shuffler.fm sits as a toolbar on top of the actual blog commentary about the songs, because it’s nice to read the stories or reviews behind the music. (Plus, those blog entries often have download links, although Shuffler itself doesn’t have a download button. Hint hint.) If you just want to listen, you can always minimize the window and let the music play.

Disney buying Tapulous was one of the most high-profile App Store acquisitions so far, and here are the first fruits of that partnership. First up, Disney reports that Tapulous has been integrated into the rest of the company — the studio is now fully part of the “Disney Mobile” division, so all future releases will come from the Disney Mobile name rather than the Tapulous brand. That contradicts with the actual App Store listing at the moment — there’s no mention of Disney in any of Tapulous’ app listings. But that information can take a while to change, so we’ll have to see if Disney updates those listings.

Second, the studio’s first game under the Disney banner is out now — Katy Perry Revenge is a Tap Tap Revenge-style title built specifically for Katy Perry songs. There are ten songs from the pop singer in the app, from “I Kissed a Girl” to “Teenage Dream,” and there’s lots of other fan-specific material, as well as a Facebook connection to share scores and updates. It’s available for US $4.99, the same price as Tapulous’ other artist-targeted Revenge titles.

So it sounds like things are both different and the same for Tapulous — they’ve been brought into the company as a whole, but they’re either cleaning out the queue of old projects (this new game easily seems as if it could have been done without Disney’s help), or continuing to work on the same type of app as before. We’ll have to see what Tapulous releases in the future now that they’re brought into the Disney Mobile division.

While many hacks we feature on these virtual pages are terrifyingly complex, this one is anything but. Even more surprising, it’s actually useful. Mark Bog decided to tether his Magic Trackpad to the sweet, endless power supply of his computer over USB, instead of swapping out AAs endlessly. To do this he merely pulled out the black and red power wires of a USB cable and attached them to a battery-shaped dowel, which slots easily into the Trackpad. The best part is that this seems basically non-destructive to the trackpad (if the 5 volts coming from the USB cable isn’t too much for its precious internals), so Mark shouldn’t have much trouble switching back if he suddenly misses the wireless freedom for a stationary desktop object that so far seems lost on him.

Simple hack turns the Magic Trackpad into a USB-powered affair originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 20 Aug 2010 19:32:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
