A feast of XBLA games may be headed to Xbox Live Marketplace soon, but that’s not all there is. First up, there are a lot of festivities planned for the launch of Halo: Reach. Microsoft is dubbing September 14-20 “Invasion Week,” and plenty of Halo goodies will be available “including new gear, exciting content, spectacular prizes and a chance to play with the creators of the game.” Microsoft will also be offering opening up Xbox Live Gold features to Silver members from September 17-20. Finally, “all fans that jump online” can download a free “Invasion” theme. It’s a bit unclear exactly what’s meant by “jump online,” whether it be players that play Halo: Reach or simply anyone that signs into Live. We’ve contacted Microsoft for clarification.

New Deals of the Week are headed down the pipeline as well, with Resident Evil 5 “avatar outfits and game add-ons” receiving as yet unspecified discounts next week. The week of September 13, several puzzle games will get the DoTW treatment. Bust-a-Move Live, Puzzle Chronicles and Tower Bloxx Deluxe are all being knocked from 800 MSP ($10) to 400 MSP ($5), while Gyromancer will drop from 1200 MSP ($15) to 800 MSP ($10).

If you still have money to spend after all that, some new Rock Band 3 Avatar items are now on Marketplace, as are two new Games on Demand, Bully: Scholarship Edition and Cabela’s African Safari.

I recently went on a search to find a good color picker for Windows that was both portable and fast so that I could stop making the trip to Photoshop whenever I needed to find a color value.

After trying a number of different applications, I was delighted to find ColorPix (an app from ColorSchemer, who is the developer behind the previously mentioned ColorSchemer Studio 2).

ColorPix has an interesting lock and unlock mechanic for selecting the color that you want to find. While the application is active, hitting any key will unlock the picker, which you can then move anywhere on your screen. Once you’ve found the color, hitting any key again will lock it in so that you don’t accidentally nudge the mouse while clicking to make your selection. It also includes a magnifier window to help with pixel precession at several different levels of zoom.

Once you’ve locked in a color, you can click anywhere on the RGB, HEX, HSB, or CMYK values and copy the individual color for the mode that you’re working in directly to the clipboard. If you want the HEX value, you can use the Ctrl+C shortcut to get it even faster.

My typical workflow consists of hitting Alt+Tab (to make ColorPix active), hitting Space to unlock the picker, finding the color I want, hitting Space again to lock it in, using the Ctrl+C shortcut to copy the HEX value, and then pressing Alt+Tab again to go back to the application that I’m working in. The grand total of time that I’m using is usually less then 15 seconds.

The only two features that I’d love to see added would be support for the HSL color mode and an option to change the RGB scale from 0-255 to 0-1.

ColorPix weighs in at about 600 KB and doesn’t require an installation; that makes it perfect for storing on Dropbox so that it is readily available whenever I need it.

Apps like ColorPix make my workflow a little faster and my life a little easier. It’s become one of my favorite productivity boosters that I use any time I’m doing design work. If you do a lot with color, it’s definitely worth a download.

We’ve had a good time with OnLive’s “instant-play” game streaming service so far, but if there’s one thing we’d change, it would be the fact that it only supports wired internet connections. Thankfully, there are enough similarly minded folks out there, prompting the service to single out WiFi support as a “top development priority” to be introduced in beta form before October.

OnLive also announced today that it is extending its Founding Members program yet again (it was due to end this coming weekend), offering a free year of service and a guaranteed $4.95 monthly fee thereafter to anyone who signs up before January 1, 2011.

For those who are already members, Labor Day weekend (that’s September 4-6 — only two days away!) will bring with it a sale on all titles in OnLive’s catalog, to the tune of 50 percent off each and every one. A full list of games available can be found here. If you’re keen to try out the service (or get a preview of its WiFi support) the company will be exhibiting at PAX Prime this weekend, September 3-5.

Whoa, whoa. Easy there, you dirty hippie. When we say “free love,” we’re not referring to the next meeting of the Rainbow Family of Living Light — we’re talking about a chance to play Eskil Steenberg’s lovely little MMORPG, Love, at zero cost this Labor Day weekend. The offer will being around 1AM ET this Friday, at which point you’ll be able to download the client on the game’s official site. This free sample will be available until 7AM ET on Monday.

Now, that’s what you have to do to get in on the free Love weekend. What you should do is watch this gameplay demonstration, so you’ll know what the hell you’re doing once you start making changes to the MMO’s completely procedural world.

There are a raft of utilities that provide a front end for the built-in Unix system tasks. Some are free, some cost a little bit, either through a purchase or shareware fee. Cocktail is a great example of a paid app that is very complete but it’s not free. OnyX is a good free app with similar capabilities.

IceClean does a whole basket of system fix-ups and the price is zippo. We took a look at IceClean a couple of years ago, and it’s been updated for Snow Leopard. Everything from triggering background maintenance tasks that normally get done in the middle of the night, to permission repair, preference file verification and cache clearing.

The app also has some network utilities for the more technically minded, like traceroute,, netstat and whois. The app can also force the trash can to empty, force eject optical media, and it can clean up many problems with Spotlight. There are a lot of other functions and you can check them at the IceClean website. Remember that like any utility, it’s doing some deep digging into the Unix core of Mac OS X, so it isn’t a good idea to force quit the app when it’s running. It doesn’t offer a lot of feedback other than a spinning gear, so caution is the word of the day. The current version supports Snow Leopard, while version 2.5 supports OS X 10.4. All these apps have some overlap, and most of them have some unique features. Check them out to see which ones best meet your needs.

As expected, Apple has sent out a quick reminder that the annual discount offer for college students — buy a new Mac, get a free iPod touch — is expiring September 7. While this date was expected to coincide with the rock & roll introduction event, we now know that the big shindig will be taking place next Tuesday Wednesday, September 1.

Got some money burning a hole in your pocket? Are you, or do you know a college student? Time for that new Mac, but it’s running out.

Remember the Milk (RTM) is a popular Web-based to-do list manager with an equally popular iOS app (here’s our review). This week, the app’s developers have announced that it’s now free for the iPhone… with a few caveats.

Until now, the iPhone app was only available to those who paid US$25 a year or $2.99/month for an RTM pro account. The free version includes everything in the full version with the following exceptions: It only syncs manually (and once every 24 hours at most) and it doesn’t support push notifications. If you depend on the app to nag you into action, you might want to move on or consider the pro upgrade. However, those comfortable with referring to the app as the day progresses are in for a treat. RTM for iPhone is a solid app that you’re sure to enjoy.

Those who’ve been putting off trying RTM for iPhone now have the perfect opportunity. Download and enjoy!

It looks like Google isn’t stopping at free phone calls to the U.S. and Canada In their never-ending quest to win new fans. They’re also going to let you watch all the free, full-length movies you can handle over on YouTube! That’s good.

The selection, however, doesn’t include current releases and there aren’t a lot of big-name films. That’s bad. But you can watch loads of classic horror films, Three Stooges, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee, Hitchcock, and a nice selection of Bollywood titles and documentaries. That’s good!

It also comes with a free frogurt! No, not really. I was just having a Treehouse of Terror flashback.

Speaking of terror, why not go watch The Brain That Wouldn’t Die!?

TeleNav is the developer of a lot of mobile navigation applications, including AT&T Navigator for the iPhone. Now the company has come out with an iPhone version of a popular app that originally launched for the BlackBerry platform — OnMyWay.

OnMyWay has a simple goal — it tells another person or group of people that you are currently “on your way” and sends them the estimated time of your arrival. The app sends new alerts to your contacts if your ETA changes (if you’re stuck in traffic, for instance), so that you can safely continue driving and not have to call or text someone else if you’re running late.

To set up a notification, the iPhone owner inputs a destination, an appointment time, and one or more phone numbers or email addresses to send alerts to, then taps the start button. iPhone contacts are integrated into the app to make setting up the notifications a snap.

OnMyWay takes care of the rest of the trip. It starts by sending an initial notification to the recipients telling them that the driver has started his trip, and then includes an estimated time of arrival. Up to three additional status messages might be sent, depending on how the driver has set up the app; if the sender is going to be late, if the person is within a pre-set number of minutes away from the destination, and when the driver is one minute from arriving.

Where I could see this app being a real boon is in letting my wife know when I’ll be getting back from an appointment. If I’m running a little late, she usually pings me via text, and I have to pull over and send her a response. With OnMyWay, she’d be getting updates and would hopefully leave me to my driving… Some screenshots are in the gallery below.
