Earlier this year BitTorrent Inc. promised they would release a Linux client this summer, and today they are one step closer to achieving that goal. The company just released uTorrent Server for Linux, a daemonizable 32-bit binary of the uTorrent core, suited to those familiar with running programs from the command line. A full Linux client is expected to follow in the coming weeks.

nullEver since uTorrent was first released back in 2005, Mac and Linux users have been begging the developers to code a version compatible with their computers. In 2006, when uTorrent was sold to BitTorrent Inc., the company promised that a Mac version was coming, and in 2008 it was finally released.

Fast forward another two years and a Linux version was announced. Voted as one of the top suggestions for uTorrent in the client’s ‘Idea Bank‘, the massive demand from users for a Linux client was impossible to ignore. In June of this year BitTorrent Inc. officially stated that it was working on Linux programs, and today the first one was released.

BitTorrent’s VP of Product Management Simon Morris realizes that the company pretty much owed this release to the community that played such a vital role in popularizing the protocol.

“If any group has embraced the possibilities and power of BitTorrent for distribution, it is the Linux community. Virtually every distribution is available via torrent download and many even ship with a BitTorrent client in the default configuration,” he says today.

“This morning, we are announcing a preview release of the first of two new products for Linux users,” Morris added. “uTorrent Server, an alpha version available immediately for download, is intended for users seeking a fast, powerful and lightweight BitTorrent client without the need of the full features and complexity of the native GUI.”

Labeled as an Alpha release, uTorrent Linux Server precedes a client with a full featured UI which is expected to be released in the coming weeks. Today’s release is aimed at more Linux users, who are encouraged to leave feedback so the development team can prepare releases for specific Linux distros in the future. The server can be managed through an HTTP API or the uTorrent Web UI pictured below, which is included in the release.

“Today’s version is only the first step, and we will continue to support the Linux user community with new versions in the near future. If you prefer to stick to more conventional user experience, rest assured we are working hard to build a full-featured client, coming soon,” Morris announced. There is currently no update on whether the company will make the “summer” deadline they set earlier.

With uTorrent Server, BitTorrent Inc’s main brand is now supported on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms in common with its main competitor, Vuze. Whether it will reach the massive marketshare it has on Windows with the two latter platforms has still to be seen though. Considering the late entrance, uTorrent has a lot of ground to make up.

Steve Jobs just showed off some screenshots and functionality for Game Center, which will be officially releasing with iOS 4.1 next week. The official app will provide social networking features for App Store games, including friends lists, achievements, “auto matching” (the rest of the world calls that matchmaking), challenges and a host of other cross-platform features for gamers on Apple’s mobile platform.

Jobs also invited a few gentlemen from Epic Games onstage to show off “Project Sword,” a gorgeous title running in the Unreal Engine inside iOS. It’s an action RPG title that’s coming soon with full Game Center integration, and the demo featured practically instant multiplayer fighting from a third-person perspective, as well as first-person world exploration. Seriously, this thing looked great, but you don’t have to take my word for it — Epic has already uploaded the very same environment shown in the demo as a free app, so go download and check it out now. It does require an iPhone 3GS or better, but man that’s a good looking game.

Game Center is finally coming out with iOS 4.1, which Jobs said would be available next week. Looking forward to it!

Looks like rumors do come true — some sooner than others. Sony has announced a new program for a variety of its devices, including PS3 and PSP, called “Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity.” According to the announcement, it is a new “cloud-based digital music service” to be available by year’s end — well, at least for Europe (where the announcement took place). With Music Unlimited, subscribers will be able to access “millions of songs.” Further details will be announced in the future, but right now, Sony’s service sounds strikingly similar to Microsoft’s own Zune Pass.

In addition to PlayStation products, the service will be compatible with Bravia TVs, Blu-ray disc players, home theater systems, and VAIO computers “with one single account and without the need to manage digital files.” Looks like Sony’s come a long way from the ATRAC days!

Sony has just informed Euroland that its Qriocity on-demand ecosystem will be showing up in the continent’s wealthier regions this fall. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK will get a chance to savor the Video On Demand option, which will form the vanguard of a wideranging content streaming service, available on Sony networked devices — yes, that includes the do-it-all PlayStation 3. The heavyweight movie studios behind the venture include 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, MGM, NBC Universal, Paramount and, of course, Sony’s moviemaking arm. But you already knew that, given that the whole enchilada’s been available to American gringos since April. All Qriocity participants will get to use a new Music Unlimited service, which is launching by the end of the year with as yet undetermined pricing. Plans are also afoot to offer Qriocity on third party devices, but until then you’ll wanna make sure to have one of them newfangled web-connected Bravia TVs or any of the litany of Blu-ray players and home theater setups Sony is busy promoting right this minute.

Rather: You’ll get to explore a tropical paradise in the Barnacle Bay expansion pack, due this fall. Whether you decide to be a lowdown, dirty pirate on the hunt for treasure and grog, or a sightseeing tourist looking to soak up virtual sun, is up to you.

The Barnacle Bay area will be sold exclusively through The Sims 3 Store this fall. Within, you’ll discover new locales such as Founder’s Beach, Goldbeard Galleon Gallery and Pirate’s Hideaway — plus several other locations and NPCs that await your inner Magellan. I like this idea a lot — developer Daniel Hellerman is working on an app for the App Store that will interface with a Windows client to control Blizzard’s StarCraft 2 real-time strategy game. The RTS Gameboard for StarCraft 2 is an app, downloadable starting in September on the App Store (assuming it’s approved by Apple), that will purportedly let you control your units and buildings through the iPad and iPhone’s touchscreen interface. The app promises “mini-map control, detailed unit statistics, and easy touch access to the games most important hotkeys and macros.”

Sounds good, right? Too good to be true, probably — unfortunately, the app only works with a Windows client running on the game’s PC, so this won’t work if you’ve been playing StarCraft 2 on your Mac (although Boot Camp should work ok, assuming the app does what it is supposed to). And then there’s Blizzard Entertainment — while it’s definitely interested in Apple’s iOS platform, it’s not quite so hot on allowing third-party programs that access and control its games. If Blizzard follows past precedent, the odds of this reaching the App Store (especially in a paid form) are slim to none.

But we’ll see — while we’d much rather have Blizzard release a port of the original StarCraft on the iPad, a half-step like this might be fun, too. Hellerman says the app is due out by September, so we’ll see if he can beat all of the obstacles that seem to be in his way.

At this point we’re fairly certain we’ll see updated iPods at Apple’s event on Wednesday, but we’re still in the dark when it comes to that updated iOS-based Apple TV — we know it’s in the works, but we don’t know if it’s coming this week. But if you’re feeling optimistic, a new Apple iTunes customer survey seems to offer a tiny little hint — it lists “Titles are available to watch instantly” as a reason you might totally love watching video on the iPad. Of course, you can’t watch iTunes videos “instantly” right now — the iPad requires the entire video file to download before playback begins, and the current Apple TV requires a fair bit of buffering — so this could be a big hint that instant streaming is coming quite soon. On the flipside, this could just be a mistake or oversight and actually mean nothing at all, but honestly, where’s the fun in that?

[Thanks, PeteO]

Late last year, we heard a pretty troubling rumor about Square Enix’s first keybladed outing on the PSP, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep — that the game wouldn’t get a downloadable version on the PSN, thereby preventing any PSP Go owners from getting their hands on it. It’s almost nine months later, and Square has finally commented on the rumor, confirming to IGN that “Square Enix, Inc. currently has no plans to release Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep through the PlayStation Store.”

Considering Birth By Sleep is one of the highest-profile releases on the platform in some time, this is an awfully disheartening turn of events for owners of the download-only handheld. We’ve contacted Sony and Square Enix to find out the reason behind the title’s absence from the PSN.

[Thanks, Guts!]

Put your thinking caps on, friends — it’s time to get to work on dissecting the image seen above. The photo in question was recently emailed to fans of indie dev Gaijin Games as a teaser for the next entry in its musically-inclined series, Bit.Trip Fate. The email accompanying the image included a challenge from Gaijin, who stated “the discerning BIT.TRIPPER will be able to figure it all out.” We consider ourselves pretty hardcore fans of the franchise, and, wow, we have absolutely no idea what’s going on up there.

The game’s official site mentions the title will receive a WiiWare release sometime this fall, so less cryptic information on Fate should surface soon. In the mean time, we’re just going to assume it’s a game about a snake made of light which likes to eat lava.

We can’t say we’d ever heard of StreamTV, but all the company had to say was “Tegra 2 Android Froyo tablet” to get us to meet up with them in NYC earlier today. The Philadelphia start-up is planning to bring its Elocity A7 — essentially a re-badged Compal’s NAZ-10 — to an Amazon order page near you, and from what we saw during the hour-long demo it may just be a contender for your stashed away $399. The 7-inch tablet has an extremely responsive 800 x 480 resolution, capacitive touchscreen — yes, multitouch worked in the browser and photo gallery — with a front-facing 1.3 megapixel cam on the left bezel. We actually got to make a quick Fring video call to one of the other tablets in the room, though it was rather lagging since we were running over it all 3G.

Surrounding the tablet is an SD card slot along with USB and HDMI ports, the latter of which did come very handy for hooking up the tablet to a 22-inch HDTV and watching an extremely smooth 1080p clip. (Thank you 1GHz Tegra II-720 CPU!) Speaking of, we also got to play a racing game, Asphalt 5, on the device, though the accelerometer steering was a bit flaky. Besides that, we’ve got to say the entire tablet experience was pretty smooth — you can see for yourself after the break and in the upcoming episode of the Engadget Show — but the unit we saw was running Android 2.1. The SteamTV’s CEO says they’ll only be shipping 2.2-running units come October and with a supplemental GetJar app store since it cannot preload Google’s Marketplace because of restrictions. He also tells us they’ll be including an HDMI cord and wireless keyboard in the box — all for $399. It all sounds rather promising, but so do all these future Android tablets!
